What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

The database rules are designed to protect privacy. Members may record the initials of their matches but not their names, email or any other identifying data. Common ancestors are generally deceased and can commonly be found by a google search. If a surname connects to a living person, they are noted as living, private and surname only. The data is recorded in the database for the purpose of genealogical research and is not viewable to the public.

Occaisonally famous or royal bloodlines research findings may be posted via blog. People who are able to prove their relationship by pedigree and end location number may post their results or voluntarily provide data to prove relationships in regard to research project. End location numbers relevant to surnames may be connected to living persons as well as ancestors and data is protected in the database, viewable only by other members who are part of the research project. The purpose of the database is to help members find common ancestors, find their own ancestors, map out new ancestors and collaborate with other members on the research project.  In order to help protect member privacy, collaboration is done via private facebook groups rather than email to limit data mining and spam. Members caught spamming, harrassing, invading privacy or data mining will be removed from the group and banned from the database.  Member profiles and gedmatch collaboration are also private and viewable only by other members. Database information will not be given or sold to medical or pharmaceutical companies. The database purpose is for genealogical purposes only.

Who we share your data with

Other members, for the purpose of genealogical collaboration only. Personal information is not shared. Members may collaborate with other members via private facebook groups or facebook IM (reccomended). Any other collaboration is up to members such as sharing emails or phone calls as private contact information is not posted on profiles or in facebook groups.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Database data is protected and preserved even if a member lapses in membership or leaves. Members can come back anytime and pick up where they left off or add new data as desired so long as that member has not been banned.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
